Extended Medical and Employee Assistance Plan Information

Some extended health plans and employee assistance plans cover a portion of fees for Registered Clinical Counsellors.  Your plan must specify Registered Clincal Counsellors, as opposed to Registered Psychologists, Registered Social Workers, etc..  If you plan to use such coverage, check with your employer to see if you are covered, before booking a consultation or counselling session.  Most clients need at least 8 to 10 hourly sessions, so calculate the cost of using various professional services; you may decide that it's most cost effective to waive use of your employer's plan.

 Free Consultation

Potential clients may have an initial free 1/2 hour consultation.  The consultations are held either face-to-face or via telephone.  This provides the client and psychotherapist with the opportunity to ask questions, discuss the fees, and to determine whether they'd work well together.  The consultation does not include any counselling; all counselling sessions are a minimum of one hour.

What is the difference between counselling (or counseling) and psychotherapy?  Is registration important?

In Canada these terms are used interchangeably.  It's important that your counsellor is registered.  There are several recognized designations in British Columiba and these include Registered Clinical Counsellor, Registered Social Worker, Registered Psychologist, and Registered Art Therapist.  Be aware that anyone can call him/herself a counsellor, so be certain that the person you are considering hiring is registered with a professional body, and that he/she has proof of a registration number.  For more information, click the tab, About Registered Clinical Counsellors.
