The term, energy psychology, refers to a number of related energy therapies that are based on the Chinese meridian system of medicine. Primary among these techniques is Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), also known as "Tapping." EFT was derived from Thought Field Therapy (TFT) which was developed in the 1980s by Dr. Roger Callahan. Dr. Gary Craig expanded on the uses of TFT by formulating EFT to incorporate tapping on all primary treatment points located on the face, upper body and fingers.
In my practice, I find EFT especially useful in identifying and releasing emotional "baggage" that has been keeping clients stuck in unproductive patterns, thus freeing them to maximize their potential and lead more fulfilling lives.
How Does EFT Work and What Symptoms Does It Relieve?
When energy points (also used in acupressure and acupuncture treatments) are stimulated at the same time that psychological issues are tuned into, energy shifts occur in the brain's electrochemical system.
Our bodies are a complex of energy highways connecting every cell and organ, influencing not only our physical state but our emotions and thoughts. You become aware that you can create a physiological change through your thought processes when you, for example, imagine biting into a lemon and you feel increased saliva in your mouth, or when you imagine your worst fear and feel increased muscle tension and heart rate.
In energy psychology, negative emotions and beliefs are considered residual energies that are not natural to our systems, and can be released, allowing a natural flow of positive life force.
Emotional Freedom Technique can be used for a wide variety of concerns, including:
What does EFT treatment consist of?
When I use EFT I first clarify with the client what issue he/she wishes to work on, and we agree on the words to be used during the EFT procedure. I then ask the client to focus on his/her concern and tell me the level of emotional distress she is experiencing. After that, I walk the client through the entire procedure, demonstrating how to tap on all the meridian points. The client taps his own points while I repeat the phrases. After repeating the process several times, the client again reports the level of emotional distress associated with the concern. In the case of overeating or addictions, the cleint reports the level of desire for the object.
Most clients report immediate relief, to some degree, and are encouraged to use EFT as a tool at home. Repeated treatments usually result in a significant reduction of symptoms.
